February 23, 2010

Emet Productions Announces New Album “The Messenger: Chapter One”

HONOLULU — February 23, 2010 — Today the independent artist known as Tshombe (the Poet) announces the release of his new album “The Messenger: Chapter One”. It has been two years and few hundred poems since his last solo project. In the early months of 2009 Tshombe released his first collaboration project free to the public as an appreciation to the supporters of his art. Tshombe’s second solo project has been long awaited and has been kept quiet in regards to a definitive release date, but the wait is over. "The Messenger" is here and is available via TuneCore, iTunes, and Amazon for the low price of $6.93.

Chapter One is the beginning of a series of releases under the title of The Messenger that will focus on Tshombe’s new perspective on purpose driven poetry and the "spoken word/performance poetry" art form. This new outlook and transformation began with a deeper look at the arts of “spoken word” poetry, its history, and the rapidly emerging generation of pseudo-poets in today’s highly expressive atmosphere. After three long years of interviewing prominent poets/artists on Freedom Verse Café, studying the works of poets from Amiri Baraka to the young Autum Ashante; His strong messages and tonality will indeed rock your thought process, and you will feel the strength of his faith and convictions in delivery. So I invite you to pick up The Messenger: Chapter One today! Available NOW!!!

Skye, A Voice To Relax To

Every once in a while we get to find out who the voice is behind the big giant head (the Wiz, I don't know!) and it is always a pleasantry to see them step out on their own and flourish just as great. I often think of the voice behind the '80s group Black Box who hid the identity of their singer for appearances, and it means that much more to me when we can truly identify the talent behind groups like Morcheeba.

Skye Edwards, former vocalist for trip-hop group known as Morcheeba, has a voice as smooth as silk and easily reminds me of the Sade spirit. In fact, it's as relaxing as a warm bath. Skye is a great break away for 2009 while we wait on the highly anticipated releases of 2010. Check out her new album "Keeping Secrets" and album I am truly in love with. Check out these video from her 2006 album "Mind How You Go" and "I Believe" from her latest projects.

HawaiiSlam the Nation's Largest Poetry Venue

Aloha poetry friends and family or as we say here in Hawaii "OHANA". Over the course of the two years of my living in Hawaii and doing radio you heard me speak of the wonderful venue we have here. In fact many of you have wondered and inquired of how you could have the opportunity to perform at this wonderful venue. Well the cards are now on the table.

This venue is known as the First Thursdays Poetry Slam hosted and headed by the one and only Kealoha. This venue has hosted featured poets such as Queen Sheba, Marc Bamuthi Joseph, Beau Sia, Buddy Wakefield, Sekou tha Misfit, Andrea Gibson, Anis Mojgani, Mike McGee, Angelo Moore from Fishbone, and so many others. First Thursdays provides a platform for all poets who wish to set foot on its stage and share their words. It also strives to expose its audience to touring poets, musicians, artists, and DJ's by hosting a special guest feature at each show which boasts a meager six hundred in attendance.

This month's special feature for January 7th show is Joaquin Zihuatanejo. Joaquin is an Individual World Poetry Slam Champion, World Cup Champion, National Poetry Slam Finalist, and an HBO Def Poet who has performed throughout the United States, Canada, Europe and Mexico. He has shared the stage with artists such as Saul Williams, E. Lynn Harris, Alicia Keys and Maya Angelou. Born and raised in a barrio of East Dallas, Joaquin infuses his Latino culture as well as his experience teaching inner city students in much of his poetry.

Kealoha, a poet himself is international known for his fire and passion for the arts. He is the founder of HawaiiSlam, Youth Speaks Hawai`i (2-Time International Champions), and First Thursdays. Kealoha has represented Hawai`i at the National Poetry Slam with a long history of accolades for his accomplishments of which most notably is his contribution to HBO’s Brave New Voices series presented by Russel Simmons. He is the poetic vocalist for Henry Kapono’s “Wild Hawaiian” project (nominated for a Grammy). Actually, Kealoha's activities in the art of spoken word poetry leaves him to be one of the hardest working poets today. So with a leader like him; you have to know that this venue is top notch.

After speaking with Kealoha, over the Thanksgiving weekend, regarding the possibility of be able to extend the invitation to poets who are making major moves in performances, strong content, and possess an atomic like energy to move the crowd. The simple answer was yes, but of course their are some caveats in place with key being content that can move a crowd of 600+ for a feature spot. If this venue seems to be something that you want to take on as a challenge or as your white whale so to speak, the 2011 calendar is ready for booking and with only 12 features a year; you must move quickly.

Send an email to Kealoha containing the following:
  • Bio to include a history performances and attendances
  • 3 diverse pieces of work (audio or video)
  • Website/Facebook/Myspace etc
  • Contact info (phone and email)
Email: info@HawaiiSlam.com
Website: www.HawaiiSlam.com

J. Period does it again with the Madness

New York, NY (December 8, 2009) – From fury to folly, overwhelming enthusiasm to complete rage – madness is a term used to describe an extreme state or extreme journey, which tends to leave the participant altered, sometimes forever. In an era of political corruption, fast paced technology, and what some may argue as a cultural renaissance, madness is sometimes the term that fits best to describe the state we’re living in today. It is the madness that speaks to our generation, and The Madness (Onye-Ala) that Nneka and J.Period present to the world on December 15, 2009. Utilizing J.Period’s unique documentary-style approach to the mixtape, The Madness (Onye-Ala) is a collection of new and remixed tracks from Nneka, the Nigerian born singer/songwriter who is quickly making her stamp on the US.

Featuring guest appearances from heavyweights of all kinds, The Madness (Onye-Ala) includes exclusive new tracks from M-1 (Dead Prez), Jay Electronica, Zumbi (Zion I), Rakaa (Dilated Peoples), Aceyalone (Freestyle Fellowship), General Steele (Boot Camp Clik) & Talib Kweli.

“What struck me most about Nneka’s music is that her story is so present in every song,” says J.Period, “The spirit and struggle of her roots in Africa, a sense of responsibility inherited from Fela, conflict and perspective gained living abroad in Germany. Her music is a contagious combination of genres and styles that just pulled me in right away. Artists who refuse to be confined to one genre are often considered crazy. Artists who follow their conscience are considered crazy. This is that brand of crazy: The Madness (Onye-Ala).

A seasoned performer, songwriter and winner of the 2009 MOBO Award, Nneka presents The Madness (Onye-Ala) as an introduction to her first US album, Concrete Jungle in stores February 2, 2010 on Yo Mama/Decon/Epic. The album is collection of tracks detailing her personal experience growing up in Nigeria, the corruption and beauty found there and the universal themes of love, growth, and seeking the ultimate truths. The Madness (Onye-Ala) is a peek into the life and sounds of Nneka, as well as a tribute to the influence Hip Hop has had on her music.

Fresh off a featured role in the blockbuster video game, DJ Hero, J.Period presents The Madness (Onye-Ala) as the next chapter in a long line of game-changing mixtapes presented in his unique, storybook style. The acclaimed DJ, Producer & Mixtape King has redefined the mixtape genre with collaborations with the likes of Mary J. Blige, Kanye West, Lauryn Hill, Q-Tip, Talib Kweli, The Roots, Nas, Big Daddy Kane, and others. J.Perid’s most recent work, “The Messengers” (a collection of Fela Kuti, Bob Marley and Bob Dylan remixes featuring K’NAAN), has yielded over 150,000 downloads since its release in September 2009.

The Madness (Onye-Ala) now available at here

NOTE: Nneka will be on tour in the US in February, 2010 in support of

Whether in front of audiences or in your earbuds they are going to change the world and that's their end game. Check The End Game in CD and download.

If you remember Poetic Xpressions, if you wanted more from Poetic Xpressions you'll love this project by Sir Charles Cary. This project is a blend of Spoken word poetry, Hip Hop, R & B, Blues, and Classical themes that leave you wondering what you’ve been listening to all this time. What stands out most is the positive message needed in today’s ever declining musical values where misogyny sells, and positivism is pushed to the bottom of the well. Check out “Around the Mic w/ Sir Charles” available in CD and download.

Blake Parker began this project with audio recording of a number of previously unpublished works at the studio of his friend and collaborator Jude Davison. These works were originally created and presented as oral stories. At the beginning of the project the creation of a spoken word archive was as far as things were going to go. This quickly changed as Jude began to create music for the pieces. If you like storytelling laced with a jazzy vibe, then you have to check out Blake & Jude’s “The Terminal City Trilogy 3: Highway Blues” available in CD and download.

EARTHOLOGY is the follow up project to EKLIPSE released in 2004. This CD is a beautiful blend of Spoken Word, Soul, Hip Hop and Jazz. Floyd Boykin Jr., founder and creator of SpokenVizions Magazine and SpokenVizions.com has released an excellent third solo music project. Recently, I narrated the landmark feature film The Black Candle, directed by visionary M.K. Asante, Jr. I also composed and recited poetry for the must-see holiday movie that Time magazine calls "fit for a poet."

My wish is for the whole world to see this inspirational film. Please support this film by:

- Visiting the film's NEW Official Movie Website
- Purchasing the film on DVD or through iTunes
- Screening the film at your school, library, or other institution.
- Spreading this message to your e-mail list (by clicking FWD)
- Posting theblackcandle.com to your blogs, Facebook, Myspace, and/or Twitter pages

Thank you for your support and have a blessed and wonderful day.

Guess Who's Back?

Ok, this morning I was on my way out the door for a morning meeting when I got the email that made me late; well I made me late, but we're not blaming me!!!

Anyways, I almost blew off the email when I saw the subject "Guess Who's Back" from one of my dear friend Sean Crawford who indidcated that when he heard the news I was the first person he thought of. I opened the email to only be stopped in my tracks when the email stated that an artist, a great inspirator, and a true messenger was releasing a new album. Gil Scott-Heron's last release was in 1994 with the release of "Spirits" and subsequent albums that were "best of" and "definitive collections".

Many poets have studied the works of Gil Scott, and many revolutions have been incited by his art to include hiphop. Many have not heard his voice in current times, but not to worry for his words will fly and his voice will rise from the burning ashes of a cold America. The man that had been long thought dead has arisen and is back with a new album that has only been whispered about as legend in smoky after hour joints for years. He's come out of the shadows to grace the stage and preach once again. For those who are unaware if the contributions of Gil Scott-Heron, he set the stage for hiphop. The poetry and verse that he's given us, like "The Revolution Won't Be Televized", gave Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five their Message. Heron was one of the first to lay the truth on track and pave the way for the beginning of the rap game. At the age of 60 he has no aim at stopping now, and his desciples are standing at the ready.

Check him out here in this video.

and take a listen to "Where Did the Night Go?"

New from Taalam Acey on New Album

TAALAM ACEY
Baltimore, MD | Hip Hop / Spoken Word / Experimental

Freedom Verse Cafe,

I pray this message finds you well. Ainsley Burrows, who ranks among my favorite Spoken Award artists, has recently begun "Greatness Magazine" and I'm this month's cover story. When you have a second, check out the short video interview by clicking the graphic below. You can also read the entire article by clicking the link to the magazine beneath the video.

Lastly, all twelve of my CDs are out of print. After weeks of searching through my archives and looking at 10 years’ worth of work, I've selected the edgiest pieces of my Spoken Word career, re-recorded/re-interpreted some and added all my new work. The new pieces were recorded live last week and nearly shut down the venue. One of the poems had to be done twice!

I'm releasing The Market 4 Change Volume 2 on two separate discs; each with over 20 poems. The 1st will be released on December 3rd and the 2nd on December 12th. If you would like to pre-order one (or both) visit: http://www.taalamacey.tv/soul. Just as in the past, your pre-order will help me anticipate and prepare for the demand as well as guarantee that you are among those to receive the first copies.

Support and invest in art that moves you.

New Releases and Recommends from FVC

With an influx in growth in the poetry community, there has been an increasing list of album releases over the past two years; sometimes you can miss the really good ones. Well Freedom Verse Café is not chucking the responsibility to the next show or venue, but instead we are doing what we are commissioned (not monetary, but by spirit and love) to do in supporting the poetic community by publicizing good poetry when heard. I am excited to announce a couple of NEWLY RELEASED albums that have caught FVC’s attention.

As a poet, speaker, and journalist Amena Brown’s words excite, ignite and inspire. Whether in front of audiences as intimate as 50 or as sprawling as 20,000, she has something to say that matters. Check out her new album “Live at Java Monkey” available in CD and download versions for a decent price.

Mannie the Poet’s passion for poetry comes from the depth of his soul, and his energetic performance and strength are heart felt within his performances. In this project Mannie touches on topics relevant today and will echo well into the future; speaking on subjects political in nature, love/erotic, and historical. Pick up Mannie’s sophomore album “Reinvention” available today in CD format and downloads will be available soon. This album sold more than 300 copies in pre-release to highly satisfied customers, so don’t miss out!

Lennelle Moise is collaborating with Kickstarter to raise $5500 before December 22 to bring you “The Expatriate Amplification Project”, a 12-track CD of the music I wrote for my celebrated two-woman play “Expatriate”. Here's a NEW VIDEO: Here and if you like what you hear and see, please spread the word, pre-order the CD and let's reach this goal!

This project is feature packed with artists such as Malcolm-Jamal Warner, Maya Azucena, Tantra-Zawadi, Marc Marcel, Al Caldwell, Tia from Gravaty, Tracy Mitchell, Lamar Harris, Coco Soul, Angela Shaw, Seviin Li, Ms. Nterpretation, El Thought, CHILL, Derek Brown, Tylan, Patricia Daniels, Jacquette M. Boykin, Indigo Lee and Tyrone, and many more. “Earthology” Available in CD and download.

Rachel Walker's “Walk With Me” is the 2009 debut release from Rachel Walker. The set offers an eclectic and harmonious blend of classic R&B music infused with sophisticated jazz and hip-hop influences. Rachel’s vivid storytelling and sultry vocals take audiences on an impassioned journey of relationships, love, pain and hope. Rachel will touch the hearts, minds and spirits of diverse audiences across the globe with her music and passion for love and life. “Walk with Me” is available in CD and download.

This should be enough to tie you over 'til next week this time...

Remember supporting positive art is supporting the revolution to a positive tomorrow.

What if this is G*d's Work

The Cipher Session, what’s that about?
Tomorrow on Freedom Verse Café we’ll commence the first poetry cipher session of the season. I am truly excited about this new feature being added to the FVC dynamic. In the cipher session we are going to focus more in the discussion of poetic work while still maintaining the entertainment functionality of the show. Each cipher session will have one or two poems that will be used to guide the discussions; think of it as the ignition to the flow of the show.

So what happened to the Open Mic, Tshombe?
Now, these segments will offer an opportunity for open mic poetry, but be prepared to answer questions and receive some feedback on your work and how it relates to the flow of the discussion. Every cipher session will consist of pre-selected/invited guests who may be poets or enthusiast of spoken-word poetry who will help in facilitating the discussions and providing incite on your work. I believe that the only way for one to develop is when you have another to give reflection in guidance and thought; this is how we develop and become better than we are.

This weekend on Freedom Verse Café.
We’re looking at the works of two great poets whose work almost seem timeless at times, and can be relevant even beyond our time. The first poet/poem we will be observing is titled “G-d’s Work” by Taalam Acey a well respected and versed poet hailing from Baltimore, MD by way of New Jersey. The second poet/poem is “Black Boys to Men” by Sekou Sundiata a visionary activist, poet, and playwright who without a shadow of doubt touched many lives during his existence here on Earth. I have invited some close friends and associates to talk about the impact of these two poems and their differences in delivery style and rhythms.

Check Out the two piece we are looking at:

Join us for what is sure to be an awesome cipher. In the meantime, I took the liberty of asking Taalam a few questions, check out how he answered.

P.S. I wish that I could have asked Sekou all the questions in the world, we miss you brother/uncle.

Good morning brother Taalam,

This Saturday at 2pm EST Freedom Verse Cafe will host its first cipher session live on air before our listening audience, and in this cipher I have chosen two pieces to open our discussion; I find both pieces of work equally important and necessary for any listening audience. The pieces chose are "God's Work" by yourself, and "Black Boys to Men" by Sekou Sundiata.

I have a few questions of you before we start our cipher:

Q1. Why did you write "God's Work"?

A: I wrote it out of concern for some of the younger writers in my generation. Their work in many cases was impressive and I worried that they didn't realize the spiritual nature of poetry and that it is a gift to be able to move minds and souls with mere words. G*d's Work was meant as an acknowledgement of Spoken Words transcendental nature and an encouragement for them to continue to write from their hearts rather than for applause.

Q2. When someone listens to the piece what response/reaction are you hoping for?

A: I'm hoping the listener at least begins to understand that Spoken Word is powerful in it's simplicity; being there's no instruments other than the soul and voice of the performer. I also hope that the poets who hear it, and write from deep within, are affirmed.

Q3. What impact if any do you think poets/verbalist have in humanity?

A: Poets shine light on what people suspect is there. They give life to the subconscious thoughts of the listener. They provide validation for the ways of seeing life's events and meaning that are seldom discussed or promoted.

Q4. How do you view the works of other poets namely Sekou Sundiata one of the art's past-on messengers?

A: I am a fan of Sekou Sundiata's mastery of cadence, voice inflection and profundity such as "Longstoryshort" and "The Blue Oneness of Dreams."

Thank you and blessing,
Taalam Acey

New sessions: Maya Azucena, Blu, Cavalier & MC K~Swift

Do you ever forget how fall in New York can feel like such a turning point? (I imagine elsewhere too, far off friends.) Standing at the precipice. The leaves have left the trees. The air is cool to the skin and the wind arrives in angry fits. There are spirits everywhere. You know summer is over and it's time to buckle down soon. The last hurrah. It's lovely to see faces you care about, that smile at you with softness around the eyes and hug you real deep and nice feeling. You might forget from time to time, but life is good, and full of surprises.

In this vein, I've been continuing to produce the newly-born Living Room Sessions series that arrived on my couch organically and is spinning into a whole lotta fun, surprises and the warm hugs and laughter, as mentioned above. Grab your boo, warm up a mug of cocoa and come watch.

.................................................................................................................

New guests include:

> Cavalier & M.C. K~Swift

> Blu

> Maya Azucena

Her Story - Her Song at the Univ. of Dayton

"Her Story - Her Song" Festival Celebrates Women's Music And Culture
Christina Chaffin - Staff Writer
October 15, 2009

The University of Dayton community will have the opportunity to journey from Africa to the United States on a musical voyage this weekend.

Blues, jazz and gospel music arranged and composed by African-American women will fill Sears Recital Hall for "Her Story - Her Song: Festival of African-American Women Composers and Arrangers."

The festival is part of an annual celebration of African-American music at UD.

Festival coordinator Dr. Donna M. Cox, a music professor at UD, has been celebrating African-American music on campus for 18 years.

According to Cox, the festival will be jam-packed with a variety of events.

"The festival will include recitals, presentations and interactive workshops, which invite participants to experience the music through hearing and singing," she said.

Throughout the two-day event, the audience will be invited to sing with a gospel choir and can learn from Rosephanye Powell, one of the nation's leading African-American choral composers.

"The atmosphere will be intimate, informative and non-hectic," Cox said. "Many opportunities will be included for others to get to know wonderful people who value the significant contributions of African-American women to American history and culture."

Dr. Linda Snyder, professor and coordinator of voice performance studies, is one of the performers who will take the stage as part of the Faculty Artist Series program.

Snyder said she has seen first-hand how large the production will be.

"The festival will include wonderful music, outstanding guests and faculty performers, and UD student and faculty collaborative performances," she said. "Most of all, the event will heighten awareness of the contributions of women composers to the world of music."

Cox said her goal is for "the audience to get an insider's view on a body of music that most would normally not get to hear."

"I also hope to see people communicating in ways that cross the boundaries of UD students, community members and professional musicians," Cox said.

Two UD student recitals will occur at 1 p.m. Friday and 10:50 a.m. Saturday, Snyder said.

Guests from other colleges and universities including Claflin University in South Carolina, Berea College in Kentucky, Central State University in Ohio and Wright State University will also perform at the festival.

"This is a great way to support your peers, as well as take a short and uplifting study break," Snyder said.

Both Cox and Snyder said they are looking forward to the festival and hope others are touched by the many components of it.

"Remember it takes a composer, performers and listeners to make music happen," Snyder said. "You, the audience, are essential."

Tonight in NYC! NBTEE and R.E.A.C.H. present DREAM SoNG

On Sunday, October 18, 2009, the NBTEE, in association with R.E.A.C.H. Communications, is hosting a benefit concert at The Triad Theater in New York City. This event will combine a variety of fine performances with a powerful purpose of sharing information and creating greater awareness about The 1st National Black TEEN Empowerment Expo and its associated initiatives.

This effort will help raise funds to support as many as 10 other local (NYC) NBTEE events between now and June, 2010, that are vital to connecting with our community stakeholders and engaging our communities of youth.

Please share this special evening with us, and forward the attached flyer to your circles of influence in New York City.

Starting this Thursday night at 7:PM, I’ll be co-hosting a new radio show, "Our Community, Our Children", to air on several local (NYC) stations, in several Caribbean markets and on www.allblackradio.com. We’re hoping this show becomes a meaningful form of outreach for us to discuss ways we can all be involved in creating more positive outcomes for our children. Each week, we’ll feature people and groups who work with our youth, positive entertainers, and important dialogue with TEENS. If you'd like to be a part of the show, let me know.

Thanks to each of you for being a part of the progress. Together, we will build better communities and brighter futures for our youth.

--

Join us for lively conversation, special guests -- and very special teens -- on The Black TEEN Empowerment Radio Show every Sunday at 3:00 p.m. Listen in any time at www.blacktalkmediaproject.org.

R. Lee Gordon (cell: 734.395.3079) www.uniteedesign.com or rgordon@uniteedesign.com
